COLLEGIATE CHURCH OF SAN BARTHOLOMEW
More well-known like " the Colegiata ", it is the most suggestive visit that Belmonte offers to the visitor with the Castle,
and in it we can admire, among other works, the font in which Fray Luis of Leon was baptized.
The Colegiata of San Bartholomew is located in the high
district of the villa, within the walled enclosure, that Marquess de
Villena commanded to construct in agreement with the council of the
villa, and next to the Old Palace, palace of the Don Infant Juan
Manuel. It is the most irregular part of the town, of narrow streets,
twisted, raised some of them, who easily bring the memory of the
primitive form of the villa.
Without doubt, one of the wonders of the Colegiata is the Choir, made for the Cathedral of Cuenca and transferred to Belmonte in century XVIII. Technicians and students give a great importance to this work, since it´s the first choir-stalls with "histories" there is in Spain. In it we can see parts of the Sagrada Scripture that in form of " histories" narrate to us the Holly History, together with more timidly treated profane scenes.
